Final Season of Mountain West Play Commences For TCU

FORT WORTH – TCU women’s tennis begins its final season of play in the Mountain West this weekend when it faces Air Force and Boise State in Albuquerque, N.M. First serve for both matches is set 10 a.m.
The 39th-ranked Horned Frogs (7-5) open the conference slate looking to snap a two-match losing skid, after falling to No. 15 Alabama and No. 40 Florida State. Air Force, TCU’s Saturday opponent, is 14-3 and has won six-straight matches. Boise State, which TCU faces Sunday, is 6-7 and has lost three in a row.
Saturday’s match is the seventh meeting all-time between TCU and Air Force, with the Frogs claiming wins in all six matches, including four shutout wins. A year ago, TCU was a 7-0 winner in Fort Worth. TCU and the Broncos have met just once previously, a 4-0 TCU triumph in 2001.
TCU is beginning its final season of Mountain West action before moving to the Big 12 effective July 1, 2012. The Frogs have been a power in the Mountain West, claiming league titles in five of their six years as a member. TCU won the regular season title in 2006, 2007 and 2008 while winning the postseason championship in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
As conference play begins, freshman Stefanie Tan has settled into the top spot of TCU’s singles lineup and has won five-straight matches. She holds an 8-3 mark this spring and recently knocked off the No. 28-ranked player in the nation from Alabama. Simona Parajova (6-4) and Federica Denti (7-3) have also been solid contributors in singles this spring.
In doubles action, TCU’s No. 3 duo of senior Gaby Mastromarino and Parajova have the team’s top ledger with a 6-1 record this spring. Denti and Kelsey Sundaram are 6-4 as partners on the year from the No. 2 spot.
