April 3, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV sophomore Ace Matias has earned Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while Wyoming senior Sasa Nemcova has been named the MW Women's Tennis Player of the Week for competitions from March 25-April 1. It is the second career MW weekly award for Matias, first for Nemcova.

Matias, from Torrance, Calif., went a combined 9-1 last week, earning five No. 1 singles wins and four No. 1 doubles victories. His play helped the No. 64 Rebels to a 4-1 record. After a doubleheader sweep of Southern Utah and Idaho State on March 25, UNLV squared off against MW conference foe Nevada. Matias defeated Moez Echargui in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and then teamed with Berard Schoeman to take down the Wolf Pack's Victor Ouvrard and Robert Allen, 8-4. The Rebels won the match, 5-2. Against Southern Utah, Matias downed Troy Benson, 6-0, 6-1, and he and Schoeman picked up an 8-2 victory over Benson and Bryton Wells. In the Idaho State match, Matias defeated Christian Martin, 6-3, 6-3 and won the doubles point, 8-6.

Against No. 62 Cal Poly on March 30, Matias and Schoeman clinched the doubles point for the Rebels as they topped Andre Dome and Naveen Beasley, 8-5. Dome, ranked No. 22 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), handed Matias his only setback of the week, taking the No. 1 singles match, 7-5, 6-4. Matias bounced back the next day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over San Diego State's Derek Siddiqui. Matias and Schoeman turned away Thorsten Bertsch and Hunter Nicholas, 8-6, as Matias scored two of the Rebels' three points in the 4-3 loss to the No. 45 Aztecs. Matias is 20-7 on the season in singles and 18-7 in doubles.

Hailing from Bratislava, Slovakia, Nemcova was 2-0 last week as she helped the Cowgirls improve to 2-0 in conference play (8-7 overall) with a 7-0 win over Colorado State on March 30. She defeated the Rams' Adriana Wojakowska at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, then teamed with Alexandra Kovacs at No. 2 doubles, where they were victorious over the Colorado State duo of Wojakowska and Natalie Heffron, 8-2. Nemcova's 71 singles victories are the most in school history. She is 11-11 on the season in singles and 13-10 in doubles.
