April 9, 2012

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team will play host to the City Championship on Wednesday when it welcomes USD to Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.

SDSU is fresh off a weekend in which it defeated Boise State and Air Force at the United States Air Force Academy. The Aztecs downed both the Broncos and Falcons by 5-2 margins to improve to 9-10 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain West. San Diego State also enters the City Showdown having won five of its last six matches.

The Aztecs continue to receive stellar singles performances from Julia Wais, Alicia Aguilar and Kristin Buth, who all own winning streaks of three or more. Wais, last week's MW Co-Player of the Week, ran her winning streak to nine while playing at the top of the lineup. Aguilar, meanwhile, has won six in a row and Buth carries a three-match winning streak into the USD contest.

In doubles, Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, the Aztecs' top tandem, won both of their matches over the weekend, while the duo of Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana Iriarte went 2-0 to run their winning streak to three.

The Toreros head east on Interstate 8 having won their most recent match, a 6-1 decision at LMU, on Saturday. USD visits Montezuma Mesa on a bit of a roll having won four of its last five and six of its last eight dates.

Wednesday's contest will represent 41st meeting between the two Division I San Diego universities. The Aztecs own a 26-14 record vs. the Toreros and have won five of the last seven matches. SDSU has won three straight in the series in matches that have taken place at San Diego State and have not suffered a home loss to USD since 2004.

After the City Championship, the Aztecs will hit the road once again and for the final time during the regular season when they face UNLV at Fertitta Tennis Complex. The MW regular-season finale is slated for Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m. PT.
