Smith Named Mountain West Player of the Week
April 11, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – TCU junior Olivia Smith is the Mountain West Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Smith went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles last weekend to help No. 38 TCU knock off 64th-ranked Wyoming (5-2) and Colorado State (6-1). With the win over the Rams, the Horned Frogs clinched at least a share of the conference regular season title.
In singles, both of Smith’s wins came in straight-set fashion as she took down Alexandra Kovacs of Wyoming, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Playing from the No. 1 spot Sunday, Smith was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over CSU’s Tori Arneson.
The Bath, England, native paired with Millie Nichols to pick up two doubles wins, including an 8-4 triumph over Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova of Wyoming. At No. 54 in the rankings, Popovici and Synkova are the league’s top-ranked duo. On Sunday, Smith and Nichols dropped CSU’s Arneson and Kaley Schultz, 8-1.
The honor from the Mountain West is the first of Smith’s TCU career and the third time the Frogs have earned the honor this season. Gaby Mastromarino was the MW Player of the Week on Feb. 22, while Federica Denti was honored March 7.
TCU closes the regular season portion of its schedule this weekend with matches on Saturday and Sunday against New Mexico and Rice, respectively. With a win over the Lobos on Saturday, the Frogs will win their third outright Mountain West regular season crown.
