Cowgirl Tennis to face Fresno State in MW Championships Opener

LARAMIE, Wyo. -
For the first time in MW tournament history, the Wyoming tennis team will face the Fresno State Bulldogs in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Mountain West Tennis Championships, on Friday, April 26. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Cowgirls enter the week as the sixth seed while the Bulldogs are the third seed in the tournament.
"We are focused and ready for the MW championships," said head coach Dean Clower. "We had a solid week of practice after coming off a good performance last weekend. The conference is deep and every match will be a battle. We look forward to the weekend and will have great support from our awesome fans."
Wyoming brings in a 10-11 season record and finished with a 4-4 mark in Mountain West action. Senior Alexandra Kovacs comes into the tournament with an 18-10 overall singles record while going 7-1 in MW action. Sophomore Jessica Parizher enters the weekend with a team high 21 wins and went 5-3 in league play. Veronica Popovici follows with a 16-13 record and Sasa Nemcova with a 15-13 mark. Popovici and Simona Synkova are 23-8 overall in doubles action while going 12-6 during the spring at the number one position. They finished up league play with a 6-1 doubles mark. Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova are 12-7 in dual action and 18-10 overall along with Kovacs and Nemcova who posted a 10-7 record this spring while going 5-2 in MW play.
Fresno State enters this week's championships with a 14-7 record overall and finished 6-2 in the conference while being ranked 53rd in this week's Campbell's/ITA Rankings. This will be the third meeting between the two schools. Fresno State holds the series record at 2-0. They defeated the Cowgirls earlier this season on April 4, 2013, by the score of 4-3. FSU is coached by Ryan Stotland who is in his first season with the program.
