Tan Named MW Freshman of the Year; Frogs Rack Up Honors

SAN DIEGO – Stefanie Tan was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, it was announced Thursday evening at a banquet honoring the league season inside the San Diego Hall of Championships Sports Museum.
The all-conference team and the individual awards were selected by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches.
Tan is the third frog to win Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors, joining Anna Sydorska in 2006 and Nina Munch-Soegaard in 2007. She went 19-10 in singles overall, including a 12-7 mark in the spring dual season.
The Bishan, Singapore, native had a 3-3 mark against Mountain West foes and played all of her matches from the No. 1 position in the lineup. Ranked No. 78 in the ITA singles rankings, Tan knocked off No. 23 Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama and No. 52 Edyta Cieplucha of SMU this spring.
Tan was also named to the All-Mountain West singles team, along with freshman teammate Simona Parajova and junior Olivia Smith. Parajova, ranked No. 119 in the nation, is 19-9 overall this year and 11-6 in the spring. Smith tallied a 15-11 overall mark, including a 6-1 ledger against league opponents.
For doubles play, Smith and sophomore Millie Nichols were selected for the All-Mountain West doubles team after notching an 18-6 overall mark and 10-3 record in the spring. During the fall, the nation’s No. 49 duo won the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship.
The Horned Frogs, 16-5 overall this spring and 7-0 in the Mountain West, also received their trophy as the league’s regular season champion at Thursday’s banquet. No. 32 TCU opens the Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday as the No. 1 seed. It will face fourth-seeded and 62nd-ranked Wyoming.
