UNLV Netters Headed To Husker State

April 30, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV will play a tennis match in the state of Nebraska for the first time as the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship official bracket was released Tuesday.

The 2013 Mountain West Tournament Champion Lady Rebels (19-7 overall/6-2 MW) will travel to the Vine Street Courts in Lincoln, Neb., to face 24th-ranked Tulsa (19-6) from Conference USA on Friday, May 10. The following day, the winner of that match will take on the winner of 16th-ranked and 15th-seeded first-time host Nebraska, regular-season champions of the Big Ten Conference, vs. Wichita State (15-10), which earned the automatic bid from the Missouri Valley Conference.

Using a 64-team format, the women's first and second rounds are scheduled to be held at 16 different campus sites. The champions of the regionals advance to the NCAA Round of 16, which this year will be played starting May 27 at the University of Illinois' Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.

This marks UNLV's sixth NCAA trip in the last seven years and 11th overall, but only the fourth that will take place outside the state of California. However, the last time the Rebels were sent east they upset VCU in the first round of the 2010 event in Chapel Hill, N.C., before later falling to host North Carolina.

"Being in the NCAA Tournament field six of the last seven years shows we are heading in the right direction here," 14th-year UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Traveling somewhere where we've never played before is exciting but we also know that we have a big challenge ahead by facing a highly ranked Tulsa team."

Tulsa, which earned an at-large bid, was once a member of the same league as UNLV as the two were part of the old 16-team WAC from 1996-98. The NCAA will release the fields for the singles and doubles championship tournaments on Wednesday.
