Two Teams to Represent Mountain West in 2012 NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Championships

The men’s tennis team from Boise State and the women’s tennis team from TCU will represent the Mountain West in the 2012 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Team Tennis Championships.

The Broncos and Horned Frogs earned the league’s automatic bids by winning their respective titles at the Mountain West Championships last week in San Diego, Calif. First- and second-round competition will be conducted Friday-Saturday, May 11-12, for the men and women, respectively. The winner at each site will advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia. The men’s championship will be held May 18-22 and the women’s championship will be conducted May 17-22.

In Athens, Ga., on Saturday, May 12, No. 38 Boise State (26-6) takes on No. 30 Florida State (18-9) at 9 a.m. ET, while host and second-ranked Georgia (23-2) will face South Carolina State (17-2) at Noon ET at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Broncos will be making their seventh tournament appearance in the past eight years. This marks Boise State’s 15th overall NCAA berth in program history.

For the women, No. 32 TCU (18-5) will battle No. 29 South Carolina (15-8) at 10 a.m. ET, followed by Winthrop (15-10) squaring off against host and third-ranked Duke (24-2) at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, May 11, at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C. This will be the Horned Frogs’ 14th NCAA appearance in school history.

The men’s and women’s singles and doubles competitions will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championships.

On the men’s side, the Mountain West’s automatic qualification slots were filled by 68th-ranked Damian Hume of Boise State and the 58th-ranked New Mexico duo of Jadon Phillips/Phillip Anderson in singles and doubles, respectively. Hume went 30-6 in singles competition during the 2011-12 slate, including a 5-0 mark in Conference play. In doubles action, the tandem of Phillips and Anderson posted a 17-8 mark (3-1 MW).

For the women, the MW’s automatic qualification slot in the NCAA’s singles tournament was filled by 60th-ranked Lucia Batta of UNLV. Batta, who claimed MW Player of the Year honors, owns a 31-8 mark in singles action this season, including going 7-0 in Conference action. TCU’s 49th-ranked doubles tandem of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith (19-6, 4-1 MW) were the Conference’s automatic qualifiers in doubles.
