W.Tennis Set For 22nd NCAA Tournament Appearance

After posting its best season in a decade, the San Diego State women's tennis team is set for the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs were awarded an at-large berth to the tournament after having a stellar 2013 season. SDSU had an impressive 22-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in Mountain West play. San Diego State earned the top seed in the league championships only to be upset in the final by second seed UNLV. The Rebels would claim the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Aztecs would be the only other Mountain West team to earn a spot in the 64-team tournament.
San Diego State is set to take on No. 20 Baylor on Friday, May 10 at 11 a.m. CT at Northwestern University's Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. If the Aztecs defeat the Bears, they will face the winner of the matchup between host Northwestern and Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, May 11 with a start time slated for noon CT.
Scouting The Bears
Baylor finished its regular season as co-champions of the Big 12 alongside No. 17 Texas Tech. The Bears recorded their one loss of the regular season against No. 29 TCU on March 27, 4-2. In the Big 12 Championship tournament, the Bears defeated Kansas, 4-0, before dropping a 4-3 upset to No. 28 Oklahoma State. BU earned its ninth-straight selection into the NCAA Tournament for their 14th-all time postseason appearance. Baylor's Ema Burgic is ranked No. 10 in the women's national singles player standings and No. 4 in the doubles standings alongside partner Victoria Kisialeva.
Previously At The Tournament
The last time the Aztecs made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 2009. The 2009 campaign saw SDSU post a 17-8 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. San Diego State also earned an at-large bid to the tournament that season.
The Aztecs faced Washington at the Marks Tennis Center on the USC campus. The Huskies would sweep doubles play and notch the additional three points needed for the win in singles play.
Seniors Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar had their careers on The Mesa capped with all-conference honors. SDSU's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players were named to the all-Mountain West singles team. The award was the third for Wais and the first for Aguilar. At the conclusion of her first year as an Aztec, Aguilar was named the league's Freshman of the Year.
Head coach Peter Mattera was also honored this season for his exemplary leadership of the team. Mattera guided SDSU to one of the best season's for any of his teams in his 20 years at San Diego State. Mattera earned his second consecutive Mountain West Coach of the Year award this season, the third of his career.
Should the Aztecs defeat Baylor on Friday, May 10, they will go on to face the winner of the Northwestern and UIC matchup.
Northwestern enters the tournament with an 18-8 mark and claimed the Big 10 automatic bid after winning its 15th-consecutive conference title. The 11th-ranked Wildcats boast one singles player in No. 57 Kate Turvy and one doubles team in No. 14 Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton.
UIC holds a 16-5 overall record and owns the regular season and Horizon Championship titles. The league championship is the 17th-straight for the Flames.
Northwestern and UIC have faced off in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before, coming in 2008 when the Wildcats came out on top, 4-0.
