Ranking Milestone For UNLV Women's Tennis

June 5, 2013

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's tennis team reached a milestone in the final national and regional ITA College Tennis Rankings, which were released Wednesday.

As a team, the Mountain West Tournament Champion Lady Rebels (20-8) finished ranked 49th in the country and No. 1 in the Mountain Region. That represented an eight-spot national jump for UNLV after it upset No. 27 Tulsa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last month. Head coach Kevin Cory's program has now finished among the top 50 teams for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.

Individually, two UNLV women's players were ranked in the national top 100 at the end of a season for the first time ever. Junior Aleksandra Josifoska (34-9) finished 43rd in singles, which was the highest final ranking for a Lady Rebel since Elena Gantcheva ended 35th in 2008. Fellow-junior Lucia Batta (38-6), who set a school record with 28 consecutive victories at one point this spring, finished at No. 54 after compiling the second most wins in program history.

Josifoska, who was the 2013 Mountain West Player of the Year, closed at No. 1 in the Mountain Region while Batta ranked No. 2. Senior Nives Pavlovic (23-15) was No. 15.

In doubles play, Batta and Pavlovic (17-13) finished at No. 5 in the region.
