"I am very excited to have Melanie and Christy on board," said head coach Ryan Stotland. "We are looking forward to the season and our schedule and we should have a good team this year."
For the fall schedule, the Bulldogs are slated to play in three tournaments. The fall season will kick off at the end of September when the 'Dogs travel to Berkeley to play in the Cal Nike Invitational. Next up is the ITA Northwest Regionals in Palo Alto, followed by Fresno State hosting the Bulldog Classic to wrap up the fall season.
The team will make two more trips to Berkeley in January for the Cal Winter Invite and Cal Kick-Off Weekend to start the spring season.
The 'Dogs will be on the road for most of February with matches at Pepperdine, USC, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Arizona and Arizona State. The home opener will take place on Feb. 22 against Sacramento State at 1 p.m. followed by the Bulldogs hosting UC Davis the next day at noon.
Fresno State begins its first season in the Mountain West with road trips against Nevada, San Diego State, UNLV, Boise State, and New Mexico. The 'Dogs will host Wyoming, Air Force, and Colorado State.
Other non-conference teams Fresno State will face include Cal Poly, Kansas State and Pacific.
The 'Dogs travel to Colorado Springs at the end of March for the first shot at winning a Mountain West Tennis Championship. The Tournament will begin on the 25 and end on the 28 with the championship match.
The 2013 NCAA Tennis Championships will take place in Urbana, Ill. over two weeks in May.
Gloria is in her third year on the coaching staff after spending the past two seasons as a graduate intern. She played for the Bulldogs from 2006 to 2009 and was named the WAC player of the year four consecutive years, WAC Freshman of the Year in 2006, and Bulldog of the Year in 2009. She helped lead the Bulldogs to the highest team ranking at No. 13 in school history. In 2008, Gloria and doubles partner Tinesta Rowe were NCAA doubles finalists and finished the season as the No. 2 ranked doubles team in the country.
"I'm excited to be back for another year to help the Bulldogs," said Gloria. "Being a coach at Fresno State means a lot to me and I am glad to have the opportunity to assist our new head coach Ryan Stotland."
Sharp will join the coaching staff this season as a volunteer assistant. Sharp is from Fresno, but played collegiately at Indiana University from 1994-98 where she played No. 3-5 singles for the Hoosiers. She was a member of the IU Big Ten Championship teams in 1995 and 1998. The Hoosiers highest team ranking during her career was No. 13. After college she coached as a tennis pro at the San Francisco Tennis Club and Silver Creek Valley Country Club before leaving coaching to pursue a Masters of Public Health at Fresno State.
"I'm very thankful Coach Stotland asked me to be a volunteer coach this year," said Sharp. "Each of the girls has a great personality and positive attitude which makes working and interacting with them a ton of fun. I also have to admit that I look forward to working with seasoned trained players. I think I am going to learn a lot from Coach Stotland and his team."
