Pack Comes Back, Nips Tulane 3-2

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada volleyball team fought off two match points in the fourth game, coming back to defeat the Tulane Green Wave 3-2 and earn its first win of the season and as a member of the Mountain West.

The win in the first match of the Fairfield Inn North Baylor Classic moved Nevada to 1-0 and dropped Tulane to 0-1.

Tessa Lea’ea was strong for Nevada throughout the match, recording 18 kills to lead the Wolf Pack. The sophomore from Stockton, Calif. also led the charge defensively, recording two solo blocks and eight block assists.

The match was tightly contested throughout, with the first four games decided by two points. The first three ended 25-23. Tulane eked out the first, with Nevada rebounding in game two and the Green Wave continuing the see-saw match with a win in the third. The fourth went to Nevada on the strength of two late service aces by Janelle Batista. The senior middle blocker had five for the match and Nevada ended the match with 14 as a team.

The Pack ran out to a 7-3 lead in the fifth game en route to a 15-9 win.

Dana Holt commanded the offense for most of the day, leading the team with 36 assists. Lea’ea was one of three players with double-digit kills, as she was joined by Batista (10) and Grace Anxo (10).

Nevada will take on the host Baylor Bears on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in its next action.
