ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- It looked as though it was going to be a quick match ending in favor of the Lobos on Friday evening, but a scrappy Duquesne team had other plans and took UNM's second match of the season, 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 10-15).

The Lobos (1-1) had more kills (58-51) and blocks (21-9) than the Dukes (2-0). They also outhit Duquesne, .190 accuracy to .142, but UNM also had more service errors, 15 to Duquesne's 10, and more serve receive miscues, eight to three.

"It's immaturity and being young," head coach Jeff Nelson said. "I think overall it was a good match, but we can't make that many mistakes. We need to have our juniors and seniors step up and lead the way for our freshmen."

Chantle Riddle led all players with 20 kills, hitting with .250 accuracy. Lexi Ross added a career-high 13 kills on 25 attempts (.320).

Senior setter Jordan Russell had 24 set assists while redshirt freshman Hannah Johnson added 19. Libero Miquella Lovato recorded a career-high 26 digs.

New Mexico opened the match with a decisive first-set win, 25-15. The Lobos had 17 kills to the Dukes' six, hitting with .400 accuracy. Chantale Riddle and Lexi Ross owned the net for the opening game with Riddle recording six kills and Ross adding five.

UNM's momentum was halted in the second set. Duquesne took an early 4-1 lead before the Lobos came bounding back to tie it at 5-5. The teams traded points, but a kill by Duquesne's Arielle Love sparked a run of six unanswered points, putting the mark at 16-10 in favor of the visitors. The Dukes continued to build their lead and the Lobos found themselves at set point, 24-16. New Mexico rallied off five points -- three kills from Ross and one from Riddle as well as an attack error by the Dukes -- to come within four, but Marah Farage laid a kill down the line to end the set, 25-21 Duquesne.

The Lobos came out with some fire after match intermission and took a 7-4 lead early on in the third set, but the Dukes slowly gained on the Lobos and tied the set at 10 apiece. As in the second set, the teams traded points before the Dukes pulled ahead, 15-13, off a Lobo attack error and a service ace by Shelby Knopick. Hitting errors and a ball handling error plagued UNM while the Dukes got an ace serve and kills from Marah Farage, Sarah Scheirman and Allison Foschia to put the mark at 24-16. Set point came for Duquesne off a kill by Scheirman.

The fourth set saw 13 tie scores and five lead changes. The Dukes led 23-20, but an attack error and a commanding kill by Elsa Krieg put the score at 22-23 and shifted the momentum in favor of UNM. Another attack error by the visiting team and a kill by Riddle gave the Lobos the 24-23 lead. A kill from Arielle Love locked the set, but another clutch kill from Riddle gave the Lobos the 25-24 advantage and a Duke error gave them set point and sent the match into five games.

Again the two squads traded point for point and it wasn't until mid set that the Dukes pulled away. A Lobo attack error gave Duquesne an 8-7 lead and the Dukes ran with it, outscoring UNM 7-3 in the second half of the set to claim the game, 15-10, and the match, three sets to two.

"I think we're evenly matched with Duquesne so it will be good to have another competitive match with them tomorrow," Nelson said. "They're a senior-led team and we need to be tougher mentally and play at a higher level tomorrow. It's a good opportunity for us to play them again."

The Lobos opened the 2012 season and the Sheraton Airport/LA Boxing Lobo Classic Friday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-12) sweep of Southern.

UNM opens day two of the Sheraton Airport/LA Boxing with an 11 a.m. match against Southern. Duquesne and Southern play at 3 p.m. before the Lobos and Duquesne close the weekend with a 7:30 p.m. contest.
