New Mexico Downs Southern, 3-0
Aug. 25, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Lobos picked up their second win of the season and of the Sheraton Airport/LA Boxing Classic Saturday morning, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-19) over Southern.
Ashley Newman tied her career high and led all players with 13 kills while freshman Skye Gullatt added 12. Redshirt freshman Hannah Johnson handled a majority of the setting duties, tallying 27 assists.
"It was nice to be able to play with the lineup a bit," head coach Jeff Nelson said. "We never really had our starters in and gave some others a chance to play. Skye and Ashley both had big kills and Skye had big numbers in general. She has such a great personality and it's fun to see her do well. It's good to give our newcomers a chance to get some experience."
New Mexico opened the morning match with a 25-11 first-set win. Gullatt and redshirt sophomore Chantale Riddle had five kills apiece to lead the Lobos.
UNM continued with steady play in the second set, topping the Jaguars 25-12. Gullatt matched her performance in the first set, tallying another five kills while Ashley Newman added four. The Lobos had 13 kills to Southern's four, and hit with .360 accuracy.
The Lobos claimed the third set, 25-19, led by Newman's six kills.
Overall, UNM had 43 kills to the Jaguars' 20.
"Offensively we looked really good, but defensively we didn't block as many balls as we needed to," Nelson said. "We had different lineups in and blocking is kind of like dancing in that there's a rhythm to it, so when you're mixing players up a lot it's hard to make that happen."
Jaquel Watts had a team-high seven kills for Southern.
Sheraton Airport/LA Boxing Lobo Classic play resumes at 3 p.m. with a match between Duquesne and Southern. The Lobos play Duquesne at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
