Rebels Penetrate The Citadel Behind Strong Offensive

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Rebel volleyball team (2-0) notched their second consecutive sweep at their own UNLV Invitational on Saturday morning with a 3-0 decision against The Citadel (0-2). UNLV got a double-double from Daryn Glenn, which helped propel the team to a 25-15, 25-9, 25-15 win.
UNLV's offense was too much for The Citadel's line of defense, as the home squad connected with a .394 hitting efficiency behind 46 kills off 99 swings. The Rebels, who at or above .350 in each set, only committed seven errors in the match with no more than four in any stanza. The Scarlet & Gray's best effort came in the second when they hit .483 (16-2-29).
The Rebels owned both sides of the net with the offense providing 46 kills off 41 assists and the defense accounting for 56 digs and 21 blocks (three solo, 18 assisted).
The Bulldogs, on the other hand, topped out at .029 in both the second and third sets, and they only tallied two more kills than errors (23-21) on 108 swings. Their defense only notched 40 digs and two blocks (two solo).
The match only featured 10 ties and three lead changes with the majority of both occurring in the opening frame. The squads sat deadlocked seven times, while the lead switched hands on three occasions to begin the match.
Glenn, who had five double-doubles as a freshman last season, combined 10 kills and 14 digs for the feat. She hit a career-best .471 (10-2-17) and also contributed 14 digs.
Madeline Westman joined Glenn in the double-digit kill club with 11 successful attacks of her own. Westman added seven blocks (one solo) defensively.
Stephanie Thelen and Kinsey Caldwell played well on offense and defense. Thelen threw down eight kills to go along with six assists, five digs, five blocks (one solo) and a career-best three aces. Caldwell's 29 assists were match-high, while she also added six digs, four kills, three aces and three blocks.
Allison Davies fell one dig shy of her career-high with 25 coming in today's win.
The Citadel was led by a double-double from Mikaela Tracy, who had team-highs in both assists (18) and digs (11). Jessica Maxwell and Ise d'Angelo tied for the team lead in kills with six apiece.
UNLV returns to action at 7:00 pm in the tournament's finale against Northern Arizona. The match will determine the champion of the Invitational, as both teams enter the meeting with identical 2-0 records. Prior to the UNLV-NAU tilt, CSU Bakersfield and The Citadel square off at 5:00 pm. Both teams are looking for their first wins of the 2012 campaign.
