Aug. 31, 2012

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Nevada volleyball team fell 3-0 to Northern Illinois in its first match at the Community Bankers Classic on Friday.

Scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 26-24 dropped the Pack to 1-3 on the year, while Northern Illinois improved to 3-2.

Strong performances by Janelle Batista and Grace Anxo were not enough to overcome a rough offensive night for the Wolf Pack, who finished with a .075 hitting percentage, connecting on 29 of 107 attacks and committing 21 offensive errors.

Batista had eight kills and hit .190 to lead the team. Anxo had 10 digs, seven kills and one assist, narrowly missing her second double-double of the young 2012 season.

Dana Holt earned the first double-double of her career in command of the Nevada offense, recording 22 assists and 10 digs.

The Pack had a 15-11 lead in the third set, but the Huskies clawed back to level the score at 18. Kills from Batista and Anxo put Nevada back on top 20-18, but three straight points from NIU moved the Huskies back in front en route to the clinching win.

Nevada will play twice on Saturday, taking on the host Pacific Tigers at noon and the Portland State Vikings at 5 p.m.
