Bulldogs Drop Five Set Match

FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State volleyball team lost to Utah Valley University in the five sets in the final match of the Fresno State Classic. The Bulldogs (5-4, 0-0 MW) were 1-2 on the weekend.
Defensively, the Bulldogs had five individuals record digs in double figures and libero Christina Lee collected a team-high 16 digs.
Utah Valley jumped ahead to 1-0 lead after winning the opening set 25-21.Callahan led the team with five kills in the first, while Murdock hit a set high .600.
In the second set, the Bulldogs pulled ahead 7-2 to start the set. The Wolverines came back evening the set 15-15. The `Dogs regained the lead with a 6-0 run and ended the set with a 9-2 run winning the second set 25-18.
After two sets, Murdock recorded nine kills hitting .500 with three blocks. At intermission, Fresno State and Utah Valley were tied one set apiece.
The Bulldogs took control of the third set with a 6-2 run to lead 13-7. Fresno State continued to build momentum on offense taking a 23-15 lead. The Bulldogs won the third set 25-15 taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.
Marissa Brand led the `Dogs with five kills in the third set hitting .400. Callahan added four kills in set three bringing her total to a team-high 12 kills as Fresno State headed to the fourth set.
The Wolverines took the fourth set 25-17 forcing a fifth set to decide the match. Utah Valley took the momentum into the fifth set winning 15-11 to win the match.
Senior Barbara Alcantara earned all-tournament honors for the weekend. She recorded 14 digs and three aces.
