Rebels Fly Past The Falcons

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The UNLV volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Air Force Falcons on Thursday night. The Rebels, who lost the first set for only the sixth time this season, picked up their second win in come-from-behind fashion with set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 at Cadet Court in USAF Academy, Colo.

The win was the 31st - out of 33 meetings - for UNLV in the head-to-head series. The Rebels have rattled off 26 straight victories over the Falcons dating back to 1999.

Both squads tallied identical hitting efficiencies (.261) and committed 21 errors apiece, but it was the home team that had more kills (63-61) off eight more swings (161-153). UNLV, who hit .267 or less in three sets, topped out in the third frame with a .485 hitting effort behind a 19 kills. The Falcons also hit their best in the third - .333 - while ranging from .179 to .293 the remainder of the match.

UNLV was led by double-doubles from Sekola Falemaka and Daryn Glenn. The former notched 10 kills and 10 digs to achieve the feat for the fourth time this season, while the latter combined 12 digs and a team-high 15 kills for her third of the 2012 campaign. Both dished out three assists apiece, but Glenn added three assisted blocks and two aces to the mix.

Madeline Westman, who blocked a match-high eight shots (two solo), hit .400 on the night behind an 11-kill effort for UNLV.

Kinsey Caldwell also racked up a double-double - her fifth of the year - for the Scarlet & Gray. Caldwell racked up team-highs in assists (47) and digs (17) to go along with six kills, two aces and two assisted blocks. The setter's six kills contributed to a .556 hitting efficiency, which saw her attack nine times, but only error once.

Allison Davies rounded out the quartet of Rebels with 10 or more digs, as she finished with 16 on the night.

Air Force got a double-double from Hillary Keltner, who had match highs in assists (51) and digs (19) besides adding in five kills.

Cami Richan threw down a match-high 17 kills, and she was joined in kill double figures by teammates, Felicia Clement (13 kills) and Ayesha Hein (11).

UNLV returns to action on Saturday night in Boise, Idaho, with a 7:00 pm MT (6:00 pm PT) match against the Boise State Broncos, who lost its Mountain West opener at home to Fresno State by a 3-2 score on Thursday night.

Notes: UNLV is 8-5 overall in Mountain West openers and 2-2 in those that have kicked off the season on the road.
