Falcons Fall to Boise State in Conference Action

BOISE, Idaho - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 Mountain West match to Boise State on Friday, Sept. 28, in Boise, Idaho. The Falcons, playing on an opponents' home court for the first time in nearly a month, fell to the Broncos in straight 25-14, 25-22, 25-21 sets.
Boise State opened the match on a 9-0 run, before a block by freshmen Taylor Parker and Felicia Clement stopped the Broncos' early streak. Parker recorded a kill for the ensuing point, but Boise State extended its lead to 12-3. Sophomore Hillary Keltner and junior Cami Richan added kills to the Falcons' tally, but Air Force was doubled up 16-8. The Broncos took a 10-point advantage (18-8), before Air Force put down back-to-back points off of a kill by Richan and another block from Parker and Clement. Sophomore Ayesha Hein added a kill, but Boise State scored seven of the final 11 points to take the opening set 25-13.
The Broncos struck first, but a kill by freshman Maggie Sherrill evened the set at two. A kill from Clement kept the Falcons within one at 4-3, while a service reception from freshman Rebecca Bates went over the net and dropped for a kill and a service ace from sophomore Emma Dridge helped even the set at five. Boise State took a 13-9 advantage, with Air Force's points coming from Keltner, Richan (two) and Parker. Hein put the Falcons at 10, while a pair of kills from Richan brought Air Force within three (16-13). Clement strung together three straight kills to pull the Falcons within one (18-17), while a three-kill run by Richan kept Air Force at one (23-22), but Boise State earned the final two points for the 25-22 victory.
Richan and Sherrill put down kills, but Boise State used a 6-2 run to start the third set. With Boise State leading 9-5, Keltner stepped back to the line and served the Falcons to a nine-all tie. Parker and Clement recorded back-to-back kills and teamed up for a block during the run, while the Broncos were unable to handle a serve from Keltner for the tying point. A pair of scores from Clement and Sherrill gave Air Force an 11-10 advantage, while Sherrill added scores at the 12-11 and 13-13 marks. Keltner evened the score at 14, while a kill by Richan helped the Falcons to a 17-15 lead. The Broncos responded with a 9-2 run and, despite a pair of kills from Sherrill that held Boise State at match-point, the Broncos claimed the win by a 25-21 margin.
Richan led all players with 12 kills, while Sherrill added 10. Sherrill, who hit .700 in the final set (7k-0e-10a) led the Falcons with an overall hitting percentage of .261 (10k-4e-23a). Keltner accounted for 33 digs, while Perich paced all players with 12 digs. Dridge recorded the team's lone service ace, while Clement and Parker each tallied three assisted blocks.
Air Force returns to action next Saturday (Oct 6), when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a Mountain West match against New Mexico at noon.
