Wyoming Volleyball Sweeps Fresno State In Three Sets

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team swept the Fresno State Bulldogs in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-14), on Thursday night in the UniWyo Sports Complex. It was UW's 14th home win of the season. The Cowgirls improved their overall record to 18-10 and moved to 5-7 in Mountain West matches. The Bulldogs dropped to 16-10 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
"I think we played a great match all the way around tonight," Wyoming Cowgirl head coach Carrie Yerty said. "I know this team was fired up to play Fresno State again and we took advantage of everything we had."
Leading the Cowgirls in kills was senior Jodi Purdy with 12 for her 21st double-figure kill match of the season. She also added seven digs and two block assists for the Cowgirls. Sophomore middle blocker Erin Kirby led the Cowgirls in blocks for the 19th time this season with six total blocks. Kirby also added seven kills for UW. Junior Calli Miller added seven kills, six digs, two assists and two block assists in the match. Junior middle Reese Plante tied a season-high with two solo blocks. Adding to a conference-leading blocking attack the Cowgirls recorded 12 total team blocks in the match. Libero Becky Stewart recorded her 24th double-figure dig match of the season with 12. Both Cowgirl setters Rachel Keyes and Whitney Smith recorded double-figure assists with 14 and 17, respectively.
"I thought Whitney Smith had an incredible match tonight," Yerty said. "I also thought Erin led us offensively and defensively, not just blocking but coming up with big kills also. Reese had some outstanding blocking early. Overall I think this was just a total team effort. We have been a solid blocking team all year and the way we blocked tonight raised our confidence significantly."
The Cowgirls held the Bulldogs without a double-figure kill player. Fresno State's Korrin Wild led the Bulldogs in kills with nine, followed by Maci Murdock with eight. Barbara Alcantara led the Bulldog attack with 27 assists. Libero Christina Lee led the Fresno State defense with 10 digs.
Both teams battled in the first set splitting the first four points to tie at two. Fresno State blocked at UW attack before Plante and Miller recorded back-to-back kills to give the Cowgirls a 4-3 advantage. Fresno State tied the set at four the next play. Both teams traded points all the way to a 9-9 tie. The Bulldogs scored two-straight points to take an 11-9 lead. Two-consecutive kills from Miller and Whitney Smith tied the set back at 11. Fresno State answered with two kills to take a 13-11 lead. The Cowgirls scored five-consecutive points led by two Purdy kills and a combined Purdy and Kirby block. The Bulldogs ended the run at 16-14 with a kill. Another Purdy kill and Kirby and Purdy combined block helped UW advance its lead to 19-14. Following a Bulldog timeout, they scored four of the next five points to pull within two at 20-18. The teams traded points with the Cowgirls advancing their lead to 21-19. A Camille Coffman kill sparked a 4-0 UW run that closed the set 25-19. The Cowgirls closed the set on two Miller kills and a Plante and Miller block.
Wyoming began the second set on a 4-0 run, started by a Kirby kill and advanced by back-to-back solo blocks from Plante. A Bulldog kill ended the Cowgirl run to make the score 4-1. Plante and Purdy recorded back-to-back kills to give the Cowgirls a 6-1 lead. Fresno State followed that with two-straight kills of its own to pull within three at 6-3. Following the back and forth play, Cowgirls Plante and Smith recorded two-consecutive kills to give the Cowgirls an 8-3 advantage. Fresno State scored three of the next four points to pull within three at 9-6. A Purdy kill sparked the Cowgirls to four of the next six points to take a 13-8 lead. Fresno State battled back scoring five of the next eight points to pull within three at 16-13. The Cowgirls advanced their lead to 19-14 led by a Purdy kill and a Coffman and Kirby combined block. With the score 19-14, the Bulldogs scored six-consecutive points led by two kills and two service aces to take a 20-19 lead. Following a Cowgirl timeout, they scored six-consecutive points to close the set. The UW run was sparked by a Coffman kill and a Coffman and Plante combined block. Plante and Miller also combined for a block during that run as well as Keyes and Coffman recording back-to-back kills to close the set 25-20.
The third set began with the teams trading kills through the first four points. With the score tied at two apiece the Cowgirls scored four of the next six points led by a Miller kill and service ace. Fresno State scored two of the next three points to pull within one at 7-6. A Kirby kill and two Kirby and Coffman blocks helped the Cowgirls to a 3-1 run to take a 10-7 lead. UW scored the next two points to take a 12-7 lead, before Fresno State answered with two-straight points to pull within three at 12-9. The Cowgirls scored four of the next six points to take a 16-11, led by Coffman, Purdy and Plante kills. The teams traded points to a 20-14 Cowgirl lead. A Kirby kill sparked the Cowgirls on a match-closing 5-0 run. The run was helped along by a Kirby and Coffman combined block and a Purdy kill. The set and match was closed out with a Fresno State attack error.
The Cowgirls will continue their four-match home stretch on Saturday, hosting the UNLV Rebels. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
