Nov. 10, 2012
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (19-10 overall, 6-7 in the MW) capped off the weekend with a four set victory (21-25, 25-13, 27-25, 25-10) against the UNLV Rebels (16-10 overall, 8-5 in the MW), on Saturday night, in Laramie.
"This was a total team effort and a great weekend for us,' said head coach Carrie Yerty. "It starts with our strengths. Our blocking was outstanding with both our middles Erin Kirby and Reese Plante. We had steady play from all positions. We served aggressive. Being at home is a comfort and our fans were tremendous tonight with everything that's going on. I'm so proud of this group.'
Three starters for the Cowgirls finished the evening in double-figures led by senior Jodi Purdy. She recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 16 digs. Calli Miller followed with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Erin Kirby added 11 kills, eight blocks and a .500 (11-0-22) hitting percentage.
The Cowgirls would score the first point of the opening set and the next three of five to go ahead, 4-3. Over the next six points, the teams traded scores until the Rebels scored two straight to take a 9-7 advantage. Wyoming answered with a 4-2 run to regain a one-point lead, 12-11. UNLV tied it up with a kill from Daryn Glenn and it went back and forth over the next several points. With it all tied up at 17, UNLV scored the next three making it 20-17. A kill from Erin Kirby stopped the run, but the Rebels recorded four straight kills to earn set point, 24-19. Two kills from Jodi Purdy closed the gap to 24-21. Unfortunately, a kill from Sekola Falemaka gave the set to the Rebels, 25-21.
The momentum shifted to Wyoming in the second set as they opened up a 7-2 advantage. After a UNLV timeout, they would score three straight to close the gap to 7-5. The Cowgirls answered with seven of the next nine to open up a 14-7 lead. They would increase that margin to nine, 20-11, with a 6-4 run. Wyoming held the Rebels to just two points the remainder of the set as they won the second set, 25-13.
The Rebels gained the upper hand in set three with a 3-1 lead. Wyoming answered with four of six to even it up at five and scored the next two to give them a 7-5 lead. UNLV responded right back with seven straight points to make it 12-7. They would maintain that lead for the next several points until the Cowgirls ran off six of eight points to pull to within one, 19-18. Two straight kills by Daryn Glenn would put the Rebels back up three, 21-18, but UW wouldn't go away. A set error by UNLV, a block assist from Erin Kirby and Whitney Smith and kill by Smith evened it up at 21 all. The Rebels quickly regained control with two kills and a service error by Wyoming to earn set point 24-22. Back to back attack errors from UNLV helped the Cowgirls tie it up at 24. After a kill by Falemaka, three straight points by the Cowgirls ended by a Jodi Purdy kill gave them a 27-25 win in the set.
The fourth set was dominated by Wyoming as they stormed out to a 10-2 lead, which included a 6-0 scoring run. That lead would increase to double-figures, 19-6, with another 9-4 scoring run. The Cowgirls lead was never in danger as they won the set 25-10 and the match, 3-1.
The Cowgirls are on the road for the final time next week with two matches. They will face the Boise State Broncos, on Thursday, Nov. 15, and the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday, Nov. 17. Both matches are set for 7:00 p.m.
