SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After honoring its two seniors prior to Saturday night's match against Boise State, San Diego State got stellar performance from both athletes as it downed the Broncos in three sets (25-20, 25-15, 26-24) on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym. The victory was SDSU's ninth straight as it improved to 20-7 overall and 11-3 in the Mountain West.
Senior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch led all players with 16 kills and hit .467 over the three sets. She also contributed six digs, a block and a service ace. Fellow fourth-year Aztec, libero Kristi Jackels, finished with a team-high 15 digs and also added three assists to her final stat line.
Two other Aztecs ended the evening in double figures in kills as Michelle Waber and Raegan Shelton tallied 12 and 10 respectively. Shelton also had four blocks while Waber chipped in with a pair of service aces, two digs and a block.
Boise State (15-13, 6-6 MW) was led by 11 kills from Taylor Murphey with Alyssa Gammel and Liz Harden finishing with 10 apiece for the Broncos.
The opening set saw San Diego State score the first three points and hold onto the lead the remainder of the contest. The Aztecs built their advantage to as many as seven points at 20-13 and before finishing with a 5-point victory. Shelton tallied four kills to lead SDSU, which hit .429 in the set compared to .250 for the Broncos.
In the second set, the Aztecs jumped out to an 8-4 lead and slowly pulled away over the course of the contest en route to the 10-point win. Hannasch and Shelton recorded five kills each in the set as the home side hit .361 while holding the Broncos to just a .032 attack percentage.
Set number three turned out to be the closest of the night as it featured five lead changes and saw the score tied on 10 occasions. With the score knotted at 23-23, Boise State got a kill to set up a potential match point, but Hannasch answered back for SDSU to even the count at 24-all. A Bronco hitting error then set up a match point for San Diego State which Hannasch claimed with her 16th kill of the night to give the Aztecs the set and match victory.
San Diego State will now take a short break from conference action as it hoists the 19th-ranked University of San Diego on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7:00 p.m. on Aztec Court.
