`Dogs Drop Three Set Nonconference Match

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team was unable to gain any momentum against UC Irvine and lost the match in three close sets (21-25, 23-25, 24-26). The Bulldogs (16-12, 7-6 MW) stepped out of Mountain West action for their final nonconference match of the year against the Anteaters.

"We have to make big plays and right now confidence is low. When confidence is low, you don't have as many people making big plays," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "If we want to change the way things are going, we have to start making those big plays. We served too many balls out and let them off the hook too many times. That is all going to change starting tomorrow."

Setter Barbara Alcantara recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 33 assists and 10 digs. She also contributed two service aces. Outside hitter Korrin Wild led the offense with 15 kills hitting .208. Marissa Brand added eight kills, Maci Murdock seven and Lauren Albertson ended the night with four kills. Murdock led the `Dogs with five blocks.

Defensively, Cecilia Agraz led with 20 digs. Brand and Christina Lee tallied 14 digs each against the Anteaters.

The first set was knotted up in a tie at four times, but the Bulldogs began to gain momentum on offense taking an 11-9 lead over the Anteaters. UCI answered with a quick 3-0 run taking their second lead of the set, 13-11. An ace from Agraz evened the set up 13-13.

The first set saw 11 ties and five leads changes as both teams looked to take command of the match. The `Dogs trailed by three points, but took back the momentum and an 18-17 lead after winning a long rally point. UC Irvine won the first set 25-21 taking an early lead in the match. Korrin Wild led the opening set with six kills, while Alcantara and Agraz recorded aces.

Alcantara served up her second ace of the night tying the second set up 3-3. Maci Murdock recorded a kill giving the `Dogs a 9-7 lead over the Anteaters. UC Irvine pulled ahead 14-11 with a 3-0 run that was interrupted by a timeout.

UCI increased its lead to 20-15, but the cut the lead to three points by scoring two unanswered points. Murdock served her first ace of the match as the `Dogs trailed 23-22 in the second set. The Anteaters hang on taking the second set 25-23 and a 2-0 lead.

Murdock won a long rally point with a kill to the back of court tying the third set 5-5. The Bulldogs fought back after trailing by NUMBER to trail UCI 12-11. A huge block from Murdock and Lauren Albertson cut the Anteaters lead to 20-18. The Bulldogs followed with a kill cutting UCI lead to a one-point advantage.

Murdock hammered home a kill in the middle of the court, which made the bench and crowd erupt with applause as the Anteaters continued to lead 23-22. A block from Alcantara evened the score 23-23, but UC Irvine held on to win the set 26-24 to win the match in three sets.

The Bulldogs travel to UNLV on Friday, Nov. 16 for their final regular season road match and return to the Save Mart Center on Nov. 21 to face Air Force at 7 p.m.
