New Mexico Lobos Volleyball - on the Mountain West road
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The University of New Mexico volleyball team dropped a four-set match at Wyoming on Wednesday evening, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-20. The Lobos drop to 20-12 overall and 7-8 in the Mountain West while the Cowgirls improve to 21-11 and 8-8 in league play.
Chantale Riddle led all players with 18 kills and 11 digs for her 15th double-double of the year. The redshirt sophomore added three blocks and finished with 19.5 points.
Riddle had three kills and one block assist in the First Set to give her 3.5 points and become the program's leader for most points scored in a single-season. With one more match remaining, her season total is 582.0. She surpassed former Lobo great and two-time first-team All-American Pauline Manser's record of 565.0 points set in 1991.
Riddle's 18 kills moved her season total to 499 and puts her at No. 4 in Mountain West history for single-season kills. She also moved up the Lobo ranks in that category, and sits at No. 2.
Riddle also tops UNM's single-season total attempts with 1,307 and is No. 4 for block assists (112) and No. 5 for blocks (129).
Wyoming was led by Jodi Purdy who had 11 kills and 10 digs.
New Mexico topped the Cowgirls in every category except blocking. Wyoming leads the Mountain West and is No. 2 in the nation for blocks per set, averaging 3.23 per contest. The Cowgirls had two solo blocks and 30 block assists while the Lobos had just 10 block assists.
New Mexico plays its final regular-season match at Colorado State on Friday at 7 p.m. MT.
First Set - Wyoming 25, Lobos 23
Two kills by the Cowgirls and a Lobo attack error early in Set One put Wyoming up, 7-3. A kill by Lexi Ross set the Lobos on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 8-8. New Mexico took its first lead of the set on an attack error by the Cowgirls and then pulled ahead, 13-10, off consecutive kills from Chantale Riddle.
Wyoming put up three unanswered points to cut UNM's lead to one, 15-14, but kills from Ross, Riddle and Skipper moved the Lobos' lead to 17-14. However, the Cowgirls again managed to produce a clutch run of five points to tie the set again at 18-18. The teams traded points until a Wyoming block gave the home team a 23-22 edge. A kill by Jodi Purdy pushed Wyoming to set point, 24-22. An attack error by the Cowgirls prolonged the set one more point, but a kill off the block by Purdy ended the First Set in favor of the Cowgirls, 25-23.
Wyoming hit .200 in the opening set (13k-5e-40ta) and had 12 blocks to just four by the Lobos. New Mexico hit .133, getting 15 kills on 45 swings while committing nine errors.
Second Set - Lobos 25, Wyoming 19
The Cowgirls cooled off in the Second Set, getting just 11 kills and hitting .077 (11k-8e-39ta) while the Lobos hit with .219 accuracy, tallying 14 kills on 32 swings and making seven errors.
New Mexico opened the Second Set with a 4-0 run featuring a kill by Skye Gullatt, an ace serve by Russell and two long volleys that ended in attack errors by the Cowgirls. A block by Gullatt and Skipper, followed by kills from Skipper and Ross accounted for three unanswered points by UNM gave the Lobos an 8-3 advantage.
Another kill by Ross a few plays later increased New Mexico's lead to six points, 12-6, and later, a dump by Russell and an attack error by the Cowgirls moved the mark to 15-9, Lobos.
New Mexico's lead increased to 19-13 off a botched serve by Wyoming and a back-row kill by Riddle, and a few points later, a shot off the block by Gunsaulus moved the mark to 22-15. A huge stuff by Riddle and Gullatt gave the Lobos set point, 24-16, however, the Cowgirls prolonged the set for three points with a kill by Coffman and a pair of New Mexico miscues.
Riddle ended the set with a scorcher down the line, 25-19.
Set Three - Wyoming 25, Lobos 18
New Mexico opened the Third Set with a 4-1 lead featuring kills by Gullatt and Riddle, a service ace by Russell and an attack error by Wyoming. But then it was the Cowgirls' turn to take a run, putting up six points to just two by the Lobos to take a 7-6 lead.
The teams traded points until the 8-8 mark and then the Cowgirls used another run to claim a 12-9 advantage. Wyoming then took off on an 8-3 run that put their lead to 20-12 as the Lobos struggled to find offensive rhythm.
Consecutive kills by Riddle and Skipper provided the Lobos with a short burst of momentum, but a kill by Resse Plante moved Wyoming to set point, 24-17.
A shot off the block by Gunsaulus added one more point for New Mexico, but a solo stuff by Plante gave Wyoming Set Four, 25-18.
Fourth Set - Wyoming 25, Lobos 20
Four consecutive kills by Riddle helped the Lobos claim a 4-1 lead early in Set Four. New Mexico's edge eventually increased to 10-6 thanks to aggressive play at the net by Skipper and Ross.
The Lobos lead moved to 14-9 on a dump by Russell, but a kill by Kirby helped the Cowgirls find some spark and doll out 10 points to just two by New Mexico and claim a 19-16 lead. New Mexico committed four errors in the spree.
UNM hung with Wyoming with a kill from Johnson and back-to-back kills by Gunsaulus, but a kill from the Cowgirls' Miller followed by an attack error by the 'Bos pushed Wyoming to a 21-19 edge. The Cowgirls closed out the set and match on block by Plante and Purdy. The stuff capped a 4-1 run, 25-20.
