Lobo Volleyball to Play Three Matches in The Pit
July 11, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Three of New Mexico volleyball's 17 home matches will take place in The Pit this fall in order to avoid parking and other logistical conflicts while The Lion King is showing at Pope Joy Hall.
All three matches are in October with the first coming on Thursday, Oct. 4 when the Lobos host Mountain West foe Boise State at 7 p.m. MT. New Mexico will also host Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State and MW opponent UNLV in The Pit. The Lobo-Aggie match is Tuesday, Oct. 23, and the Rebels come to town on Thursday, Oct. 25. Both games begin at 7 p.m. MT.
"We're happy to have to the opportunity to play at The Pit," Nelson said. "It's important that our great fan base still has access to our matches even while The Lion King is going on and maybe we can attract some new fans with the temporary change in venue."
While The Pit is well known as being the home of Lobo basketball, the UNM volleyball program called The Pit home from 1996-1999. The Lobos split time between the Johnson Center and The Pit in 1999, playing conference matches at the Johnson Center and non-conference contests in The Pit. The Lobos moved back to the Johnson Center full time in 2000.
The Pit was also the site of the 1992 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Final Four. Stanford defeated UCLA by a 3-1 decision, while Long Beach State and Florida were semifinalists.
