Aug. 16, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The 2012 Lobo volleyball squad will get its first taste of competition this Saturday in the program's annual alumni match. The current Lobos take on the former Lobos at 6 p.m. in the Johnson Center. Admission to the match is free.

New Mexico's squad of six returners and seven newcomers will face a roster loaded with five All-Americans: Allison Buck and Ashley Rhoades (both honorable mention in 2011), Jeanne Fairchild (third team in 2008), Pauline Manser (first team in 1991 and 1992) and Maria Gurreri (second team in 1990).

Over 15 alumni have confirmed they will be at the event.

"This is the most alumni we've had back in a long time," head coach Jeff Nelson said on Wednesday at UNM's media day. "It should be a fun event."

Prior to Saturday's evening match, there will be a 10 a.m. brunch at The Frontier followed by an alumni vs. alumni match at 11:30 a.m. in Johnson.

The Lobos open the regular season at home with the Sheraton Airport/LA Boxing Lobo Classic Aug. 24-25. New Mexico begins play at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 against Duquesne and also faces Southern that evening at 7:30.
