Mountain West Begins 2012 Women's Volleyball Season on Aug. 24

2012 MW Women's Volleyball Guide

All nine Mountain West women's volleyball teams will be in action on Friday, Aug. 24. League newcomers Fresno State and Nevada begin their seasons on the road at the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational hosted by UTEP and the Fairfield Inn North Baylor Classic, respectively. No. 25 Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Wyoming start the 2012 campaign with home tournaments. Air Force and Boise State go on the road to start the season.

Notables:

    • CSU Predicted to Win 2012 MW Title; Won 2011 MW Regular Season and Tournament Titles ... Colorado State is predicted, by the league's head coaches, to win the 2012 MW crown, earning eight first-place votes and 80 points in the 2012 MW Preseason Women's Volleyball Coaches Poll.     CSU secured its third consecutive regular-season Conference title on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011. The Rams earned a share of first-place on Nov. 4 with a 3-0 win over Wyoming, then won the title outright the next day when San Diego State stopped TCU, 3-0, to give the Horned Frogs their fourth MW loss. It was the ninth Mountain West women's volleyball title for CSU in 13 seasons. The Rams went on to earn their fifth MW tournament crown with 3-0 wins against Air Force, Wyoming and UNLV in the 2011 Mountain West Championship in Albuquerque, N.M.

    • Overall Attendance High in MW ... Mountain West women's volleyball fans were out in full force for the 2011 season. Home attendance in the Mountain West reached a new high at an average of 1,029 and cracked the 100,000 fans mark for the third year in a row (101,900). In 2010, the Mountain West established a new overall league attendance mark of 137,052. That season MW women's volleyball fans came through the turnstiles at a record average of 1,008 per home match, an average of 55 fans per match better than the previous record of 953, set in 2009. The first season in which over 100,000 fans watched MW women's volleyball was in 2009 (114,357).
