Cowgirl Volleyball Set To Host UniWyo Wyoming Invite

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will begin its 2012 campaign on Friday, Aug. 24 hosting the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational. Fifth-year head coach Carrie Yerty and the Cowgirls are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and with all six starters returning are looking to accomplish that feat for the third-consecutive season. The UniWyo Wyoming Invite will feature host Wyoming, Presbyterian College, Seattle University, University of San Francisco and Eastern Washington University.
"I feel like our team is prepared and ready to see another team across the net," Yerty said. "We have some very good teams coming to our tournament and we need to be ready to play our best. Our team has been working very hard, everyone is healthy, and they are intense and focused."
With their six starters returning from the 2011 squad that went 22-10, the Cowgirls were selected to finish third by the Mountain West Conference coaches which is their highest preseason selection since joining the conference in 1999. Adding to their highest preseason selection, senior outside hitter Jodi Purdy was selected as the Preseason MW Co-Player of the Year and Preseason All-MW team. Purdy returns to the Cowgirls as their leader in kills with 3.41 per match. She also led in service aces with 0.28 per set and points per set with 4.09. She finished the conference season third in points, fourth in kills, fifth in aces and ninth in digs. Wyoming volleyball also returns five other starters including senior Camille Coffman, juniors Rachel Keyes, Calli Miller and Becky Stewart as well as sophomore All-MW performer Erin Kirby. The UniWyo Wyoming Invite will begin for the Cowgirls at 1:30 p.m. on Friday against Presbyterian. They will continue play Friday night at 7 p.m. against San Francisco. On Saturday, the Cowgirls will battle Eastern Washington (1:30 p.m.) and Seattle (7 p.m.).
Scouting The Tournament Teams:
Presbyterian College Blue Hose: Presbyterian returns all six starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2011 season. The 2011 squad went 13-17 overall. In the Big South Conference, the Blue Hose went 7-7 to finish in fifth place. They are led by head coach Chris Belshe who enters his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a 82-113 record at Presbyterian. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Cowgirls and Blue Hose.
San Francisco Dons: San Francisco Volleyball returns four starters from the 2011 team that went 16-13 overall. It also returns 11 letterwinners from last season's squad. The Dons went 8-8 and finished fifth in the West Coast Conference. San Francisco is led by sixth-year head coach Gilad Doron who has a 73-70 overall record. The Cowgirls and the Dons have met one time prior on Sept. 20, 1982 with UW winning in straight sets.
Eastern Washington Eagles: Eastern Washington is coming off a 13-15 2011 season. It returns five starters and nine letterwinners from a season ago. The Eagles welcome their five starters from 2011 after posting a 9-7 Big Sky Conference record and finishing fourth. Head coach Miles Kydd enters his fifth season with Eastern Washington, he has recorded a 57-56 overall record in Cheney. This will be the second meeting between UW and EWU, with the Cowgirls winning the only meeting 3-0 in 1993.
Seattle Redhawks: Seattle University is coming off a 5-22 season. The Redhawks return 10 letterwinners, three starters and their libero from last season. They are entering their first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Head coach Shannon Ellis returns for her ninth season at SU with a 99-127 overall record. This will be the Cowgirls and the Redhawks second meeting. Wyoming won the first meeting 3-2 on Sept. 18, 2010.
