SDSU TO HOST HOLIDAY INN MISSION VALLEY AZTEC CHALLENGE
San Diego State will host its second consecutive tournament of the 2012 campaign this weekend with the four-team 2012 Holiday Inn Mission Valley Aztec Challenge. The other tourney participants include Sacred Heart, Montana and Utah State. SDSU's opening match will be against Montana on Friday (Aug. 31) at 7:30 pm. On Aztec Court in Peterson Gym. The complete tourney schedule is as follows:
Friday, August 31
    Montana vs. Utah State.............5:00 p.m.
    Sacred Heart vs. San Diego State...7:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 1
    Sacred Heart vs. Utah State........9:30 a.m.
    Montana vs. San Diego State.......12:00 p.m.
    Montana vs. Sacred Heart...........5:00 p.m.
    Utah State vs. San Diego State.....7:30 p.m.
SERIES RECORDS
San Diego State holds a 6-3 edge in its series against Utah State that began in 1978. The Aztecs had won six straight against the Aggies until Utah State took the most recent meeting (3-0) at the Arizona State Sheraton Classic during the 2010 season. The Aztecs are 3-0 vs. the Aggies in San Diego, 1-0 in Logan and 2-3 on neutral courts.
This weekend's matches against Sacred Heart and Montana will mark the first meetings with both of those schools.

IN THE NATIONAL POLL
After opening the season with a pair of wins including a victory over 17th-ranked California, San Diego State is receiving votes in this week's AVCA national poll. The Aztecs make their first appearance with 36 points, the second-highest total outside the top 25 behind only Ohio State.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for her performance during last weekend. Against Delaware, she recorded a .643 attack percentage on 11 kills to go along with four digs and six block assists. Her 19 kills in the win over Cal was one shy of her career high as an Aztec. For the week, Hannasch averaged 3.75 kills, 1.38 digs and 1.12 blocks per set, while hitting .545. She averaged 4.62 points per set over eight total sets.

WABER SHINES IN DEBUT
Sophomore Michelle Waber, a transfer from the University of Hawai'i, had an impressive opening weekend in her SDSU debut. In the win over Delaware, she recorded 16 kills, a service ace, four digs and three blocks. The next evening she had a career-high 209 kills in the victory over No. 17 Cal. Waber was named the MVP of the Aztec Invitational.

HARRIS ON THE BLOCK
Emily Harris notched nine block assists in the victory over Cal last Saturday, one shy of her career high. She also recorded 10 kills in that match and hit .368. For the weekend she averaged 1.62 kills per set and 1.38 blocks per set while hitting .460.

MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Three current Aztecs moved into the top 10 on the SDSU career lists in various categories last season and should move up as the 2012 season progresses. Andrea Hannasch's three-year total of 365 block assists ranks sixth on the SDSU all-time list. The number-five spot is held down by Carrie Mapes (1994-97) with 381. Kristi Jackels has compiled 1,396 digs during her time as an Aztec to rank third in that category. Jackie Mendez (1985-88) ranks second with 1,678 career digs. Setter Johnna Fouch's two-year mark if 2,493 assists place her eight. The seventh spot is held by Leah Lathrop (2005-08) with 2,624 assists.

AZTEC NOTES
Defensive specialist Justin Ricigliano made appearances in two of the sets vs. Cal last Saturday and served the final two points in SDSU's wins in the third and fifth sets, including an ace in the third set ... Setter Johnna Fouch equaled her career best with three service aces in the match against California ... Chaiymin Steel recorded first career solo block vs. Cal ... SDSU captured the championship of the Aztec Invitational for third straight year.
