Week Two - Volleyball Notes

FIRST SERVES: The UNLV Rebels hit the road for the first time in 2012 with a visit to the "City of Roses" for the Nike Portland Invitational hosted by the University of Portland at the Chiles Center. UNLV will face the Idaho State Bengals, Tennessee State Tigers and the host Portland Pilots in the two-event that spans Aug. 31 to Sept. 1.

The Rebels open up play with a contest against Idaho State on Friday evening at 5:00 pm. They will play a pair of matches on Saturday with a morning tilt vs.Tennessee State (11:00 am) before the tournament's finale against Portland (7:30 pm).

ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels will return to Las Vegas next week and host its second and final home tournament of the 2012 season. The UNLV Classic will take place Sept. 7-8 at the Cox Pavilion and feature Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern and Gonzaga.

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels went 2-1 last weekend in their own UNLV Invitational played at the Cox Pavilion. UNLV opened up the season with back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of CSU Bakersfield and The Citadel before succumbing to Northern Arizona in the tournament's championship match by a 3-1 score.

The Rebels, who claimed second place in the two-day event, placed Kinsey Caldwell, Daryn Glenn and Madeline Westman on the seven-person all-tournament team.

Glenn led all Rebels with a pair of double-doubles, and she finished the weekend with a team-best 39 kills. She was second in digs with 37.

Westman led the squad in all three blocking categories: 16 total, 13 assisted and three solo. She was second in kills (39) and hitting efficiency (.315).

Stephanie Thelen, who had a double-double vs. NAU, chipped in 27 kills, 24 digs, 11 assists, nine total blocks (one solo) and four aces.

Caldwell notched a double-double in her first career match and followed it up by recording 109 assists, 26 digs, 13 kills, six assisted blocks and three aces. She dished out 52 assists in the NAU contest.

SMALL SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will have two of its Mountain West matches nationally televised this season by the CBS Sports Network. Both of UNLV's Sunday matinee's in conference play - Oct. 7 at San Diego State and Oct. 14 vs. Colorado State - will appear on the small screen.
