Volleyball To Compete at 2012 Fullerton Classic

San Diego State will make a short trip north to play in its final tournament of the season when it visits Fullerton for the five-team 2012 Fullerton Classic. The other tourney participants include Santa Clara, Brown, Oregon State and Cal State Fullerton. SDSU's opening match will be against tournament host Santa Clara on Friday (Sept. 14) at 11:00 a.m. (PT) at Titan Gym. The Aztecs will face host Cal State Fullerton that night at 7:00 p.m. The complete tourney schedule is as follows:

** Santa Clara holds a 2-1 edge in the series against San Diego State. Two of those matches have come at neutral sites while the third was at Santa Clara. The teams have not met since the 2003 campaign when the Broncos defeated the Aztecs at the Arizona Wildcat Classic.
** San Diego State's all-time record against Cal State Fullerton stands at 44-5 in a series that began in 1976. The series has been very competitive over the last few years as the teams split eight matches since 2004 with each winning four on its home floor. SDSU's last win in Fullerton came during the 1995 season.
** The Aztecs have won three of its previous contests against Oregon State. SDSU is 2-0 vs. OSU at home and 1-1 at neutral sites. The most recent meeting between the Aztecs and beavers came in 2006 when Oregon State claimed a 3-1 victory in Corvallis.
** San Diego State was victorious in its only previous match against Brown. That contest was during the 1995 season when the teams met in San Diego at the SDSU Tournament.
Senior libero Kristi Jackels was named to the all-tournament team at last weekend's Verizon Volleyball Challenge in Honolulu. Over SDSU's three matches she averaged 3.58 digs per set and turned in a season-high 23 in the contest against Hawai'i. Jackels also had 12 assists (1.00 per set) and a service ace during the weekend competition.
SMASH BY NASH
Junior outside hitter Summer Nash had a career-high 2 kills in the match against ninth-ranked Hawai'i last Friday (Sept. 7). Her 22 points in that contest also marked her personal best as an Aztec. Two nights later she recorded 18 kills in the win over Idaho. For the weekend she averaged 3.83 kills per set.
HANNASCH LEADS THE OFFENSE
Senior Andrea Hannasch continues to lead the Aztecs in hitting percentage at .398, a mark that ranks second in the Mountain West this week. Over SDSU's eight matches she is averaging 2.83 kills and 1.07 digs per set. Hannasch has also recorded team-leading 3.65 points per set.
STEEL SETS CARRER HIGHS
Sophomore right side hitter Chaiymin Steel set her SDSU career bests with 13 kills and 14.5 points in the win over Idaho on Sept. 9. She also turned is a personal best .524 hitting percentage (13k-2e-21ta). Steel also had three block assists in that contest to maintain her average of just under one block (0.97) per set this season. She has started every match thus far in 2012.
MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Three current Aztecs moved into the top 10 on the SDSU career lists in various categories last season and should move up as the 2012 season progresses.
** Andrea Hannasch's three-year total of 386 block assists moves her into a tie with Megan Schauermann (2000-03) for the number-four spot on the SDSU all-time list. The number-three position is held down by Aspen McPartland (2000-03) with 398.
** Kristi Jackels has compiled 1,469 digs during her time as an Aztec to rank third in that category. Jackie Mendez (1985-88) ranks second with 1,678 career digs.
** Setter Johnna Fouch's two-year mark if 2,623 assists place her eight. The seventh spot is held by Leah Lathrop (2005-08) with 2,624 assists.
