Heading Back Out On The Road

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After playing two matches at home last weekend, the UNLV Rebels pack their bags for the third time in a four-week span with visits to Reno, Nev., and San Diego this week. UNLV will face its in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Thursday night at 7:00 pm, prior to its 1:00 pm tilt on Sunday afternoon against San Diego State.

The contest at SDSU will be televises, and it's the first of two TV appearances for the Rebels this season on the CBS Sports Network.

SCOUTING NEVADA, RENO: The Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack enter the week with a 4-12 overall record and a1-2 mark in Mountain West play. UNR, who is playing its first season as a member of the MW, went 0-2 last week with losses on the road to Colorado State (3-0) and Wyoming (3-2). The Wolf Pack opened the season with a win before they dropped its next 10. Since they began 1-10, UNR has won three of five.

The Wolf Pack is led by Tessa Lea'ea (192 kills and 86 blocks), Dana Holt (528 assists), Grace Anxo (18 aces) and Kara Kasser (168 digs).

UNLV leads the all-time series 13-7, and it has won six straight matches over UNR dating back to the 2006 season. The Rebels, who are 5-2 against the Wolf Pack in Reno, have won three straight at the Virginia Street Gym including last year's 3-0 contest on Sept. 21.

SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The San Diego State Aztecs enter the week with a 9-6 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Mountain West play. The Aztecs host Fresno State on Thursday evening before squaring off with UNLV on Sunday. SDSU went 1-1 last week with a 3-2 win at Wyoming before a 3-0 loss at Colorado State. The Aztecs opened the season 5-0 (all home), but have since gone 4-6 (all road/neutral) in their last 10 outings.

The Aztecs are led by Summer Nash (174 kills), Johnna Fouch (347 assists), Andrea Hannasch (14 aces), Kristi Jackels (214 digs) and Emily Harris (71 blocks).

SDSU leads the all-time series 21-14, and it has won six of the last eight meetings. The Rebels, who had lost five straight from 2008-10, won two of three against the Aztecs last season, including a 3-0 upset victory - #7 seed over #2 seed - at the 2011 MW Championships on Nov. 18.

ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels return home for a pair of matches against their Front Range foes from the Rocky Mountains. UNLV will square off with the Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday, Oct. 11 (7:00 pm) before hosting the Colorado State Rams in a televised affair - CBS Sports Network - on Sunday, Oct. 14 (1:00 pm).

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels went 2-0 last week at home against Utah Valley and New Mexico. UNLV, who jumped out of conference play to face UVU, knocked off the Wolverines by a 3-1 score. A day later, the Rebels swept past the UNM Lobos. The wins helped extend UNLV's winning streak to five matches.

Sekola Falemaka led the Rebels offensively with 32 kills off a .329 hitting efficiency, while adding 22 digs, four aces, four blocks (one solo) and three assists. Falemaka notched a double-double - her sixth of the season - against Utah Valley.

Daryn Glenn, who pitched in 15 digs, five assisted blocks and an ace, was second on the team in kills with 20.

Kinsey Caldwell picked up her seventh double-double of the season in the outing vs. UNM. Overall, Caldwell dished out 79 assists and dug out 20 attacks to go along with six blocks (one solo), four kills and three aces.

Stephanie Thelen set a career and season high in digs with 20 against UVU, which helped her lead the squad in that statistical category with 29. In all, five players had 20 or more digs on the weekend.

Madeline Westman led the Rebel blockers with 10 putbacks with one coming as a solo block. Westman pitched in 16 kills and three digs, as well.

SMALL SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will have two of its Mountain West matches nationally televised this season by the CBS Sports Network. Both of UNLV's Sunday matinee's in conference play - Oct. 7 at San Diego State and Oct. 14 vs. Colorado State - will appear on the small screen.
