Aztecs Visit UC Irvine, Host New Mexico This Week

San Diego will take a break from conference play to make a short trip north to face UC Irvine on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Anteaters' Bren center. Two days later (Thursday, Oct. 18) the Aztecs will return to Mountain West action when they host New Mexico in a match scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m. on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym.
*** San Diego State's record against UC Irvine stands at 15-6 since the teams first squared off during the 1976 season. Last year the Aztecs took a four-set decision from the Lobos during the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. The Aztecs are 11-3 all-time vs. the Anteaters in Peterson Gym, 4-2 in Irvine and 0-1 on neutral courts.
*** The Aztecs' all-time record vs. New Mexico stands at 30-18 since the teams first met during the 1991 season. The Lobos have had the upper hand in recent years, winning seven of the last 10 matches since 2007 although the Aztec swept the two matches between the teams a year ago. The series goes back to 1976 and schools have met annually since 1990 when both were members of the Western Athletic Conference. SDSU has a 10-10 mark against the Lobos in Albuquerque, 15-8 in San Diego and 5-0 on neutral courts.
Raegan Shelton led the Aztecs in kills in both of last week's matches (at Boise State and at Air Force) with 16 and 20 respectively as she averaged 4.00 kills/set over the two contests. Her 20 kills against Air Force matched her season high that she also had vs. UNLV on Oct. 7. She has led SDSU in kills in each of the last four matches. Her average during that run is 3.84 kills per game. She had a career- season-high 24.0 points in the win at Air Force last weekend. Shelton has recorded at least one service ace in each of the last 10 matches.
FOUCH'S BEST EFFORTS
Johnna Fouch recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 10 digs at Air Force on Oct. 13. She also recorded season bests of three kills and a .600 hitting percentage vs. the Falcons. She set personal season highs with 55 assists and 16 digs in the win over UNLV on Oct. 7.
HARRIS ON THE BLOCK
Emily Harris has emerged as the team's leading blocker averaging 1.25 per set. She notched a career-high 10 block assists at Air Force last Saturday (Oct. 13). She notched nine block assists in the victory over Fresno State on Oct. 4, a total that equaled her season best at the time. Over SDSU's last four matches she has averaged 1.63 blocks per set. She also recorded 1.42 kills per set over those four contests.
STEEL SETS NEW HIGHS
Sophomore Chaiymin Steel set a trio of career highs last week. In the match at Boise State on Oct. 11 she recorded a personal-best 15 kills and 17.5 points. In the win at Air Force two days later she had a career-high nine block assists. Over SDSUs' last four matches she is averaging 1.21 blocks per set.
MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Three current Aztecs moved into the top 10 on the SDSU career lists in various categories last season and should move up as the 2012 season progresses:
***Andrea Hannasch's three-year total of 433 block assists moves her into the number-two spot on the SDSU all-time list. The all-time leader is Jennifer Miller (1989-92) with 480 block assists.
***Kristi Jackels has compiled 1,658 digs during her time as an Aztec to rank third in that category. Jackie Mendez (1985-88) ranks second with 1,678 career digs.
***Setter Johnna Fouch's mark of 2,975 career assists place her fifth. The fourth spot is held by Erin Tomblin (1988-89) with 3,144 assists.
The Aztecs have lost back-to-back matches only once this season ... Setter Johnna Fouch (assists-digs) has recorded four double-doubles this season to lead the team. Outside hitter Michelle Waber (kills-digs) has three and Chloe Mathis (assists-digs) has two while Raegan Shelton has one (kills-digs) ... Andrea Hannasch and Emily Harris are the only two Aztecs to have started every match this season. Senior Kristi Jackels has also been the stating libero for every match in 2012 ... Halle Aiken set a personal career high with 11 digs at Boise State on Oct. 11 ... Courtney Vaccarello had a personal season-high seven digs in the win over UNLV on Oct. 7 ... Libero Kristi Jackels tied her personal season high with seven assists against UNLV on Oct. 7 ... Defensive specialist Kyla Oropeza recorded her second kill of the year in the win at Air Force on Oct. 13.
