Wyoming Volleyball Returns Home For Two Conference Matches

After a three-match road swing the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will return to the UniWyo Sports Complex to host two matches on Thursday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 20. The Cowgirls will welcome Air Force (8-12 overall, 2-4 Mountain West) on Thursday night beginning at 7 p.m. followed by Boise State (11-10 overall, 3-3 MW) on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls enter the weekend on a three-match losing streak having lost their last two matches in five sets. They have a 13-8 overall record and 1-5 mark in the league.
Coming off back-to-back five set losses the Cowgirls are looking to notch two wins on the weekend. The Cowgirls are led by senior outside hitter Jodi Purdy who recorded a double-double and triple-double over the weekend. Against UNLV, Purdy had a double-double with 22 kills and 13 digs. She followed that performance with a triple-double against Fresno State recording 18 kills, 20 digs and 10 blocks. On the season, Purdy leads the Cowgirls averaging 3.27 kills per set and 4.05 points per set, which rank sixth and fourth, respectively, in the conference. Junior libero Becky Stewart leads the Cowgirls and the conference with 4.74 digs per set. In blocking, Cowgirls Erin Kirby and Reese Plante rank second and sixth, respectively, in the MW. Kirby is second in the conference, averaging 1.42 per set while Plante is sixth, averaging 1.24 per set. Junior setter Rachel Keyes is currently eighth in the MW in assists, averaging 5.83 per set.
A look at the Falcons: Air Force is currently 8-12 overall on the season and 2-4 in the Mountain West. The Academy is 0-4 away from Colorado Springs, Colo., this season and enter the match with a 2-3 record in its last five games. The Falcons are led by Cami Richan who is averaging 3.21 kills and 3.42 points per set. Leading the Air Force offense is Hillary Keltner who is averaging 9.66 assists per set while adding 2.64 digs per set. Libero Maiya Perich leads the Falcon defense with 353 total digs to average 4.64 per set. Taylor Parker has a team-high 48 total blocks. This will be the 35th meeting between the Cowgirls and the Falcons with UW leading the all-time series 29-5. Wyoming has won the last 16 meetings dating back to 2004. The Cowgirls won the last meeting 3-0 in Colorado Springs on Oct. 20, 2011. Head coach Matt McShane is in this third season at the helm of the Falcon program.
A look at the Broncos: Boise State travels to Laramie on a three-match winning streak and an 11-10 overall record. The Broncos are 3-3 in the Mountain West this season. Leading the Boise State attack is Liz Harden who is averaging 3.68 kills per set and 3.95 points per set. Two players lead the Broncos in assists, including Casey Rose who is averaging 6.46 per set, followed by Sarah Baugh who averages 5.23. Leading the Bronco defense is Kersti Whitney who is averaging 4.34 digs per set on the season. In blocking, Brittany Reardon leads with 69 total to average 0.91 per set. Reardon also leads the team in hitting percentage at .323 (150-45-325). Saturday's meeting with be the 14th in the series between the Cowgirls and the Broncos. Wyoming leads all time 7-6 but has lost three consecutive matches dating back to 2010. The Cowgirls lost the last meeting 3-1 on Oct. 22, 2011. UW's last win against Boise State came on Sept. 1, 2005. The Broncos are led by head coach Shawn Garus who is in his fourth season at Boise State.
