Bulldogs Face Aneaters, Rebels

FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State volleyball hosts UC Irvine in its final nonconference match of the 2012 season. The Bulldogs face the Anteaters on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Save Mart Center. The `Dogs head to Las Vegas for their final regular season road trip of the year. The Bulldogs and Rebels face off on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
Fresno State vs. UC Irvine
The Bulldogs and Anteaters meet for the first time since 1996. The 'Dogs won that match in three sets, which was played in Fresno, Calif. on Sept. 13. Fresno State leads the overall series 13-9.
Scouting the Anteaters
UC Irvine has an overall mark of 10-19 late in the 2012 season and a Big West record of 5-10. The Anteaters have lost their last five matches, which included taking No. 9 Hawai'i to five sets. UCI is averaging 13.1 kills, 17.5 digs and 2.3 blocks per set, while hitting .203. Aly Squires leads the Anteaters offense with 3.7 kills per set and hitting .212. Ella Rosenfield is leading the team with 1.2 blocks per set. Defensively, Kristin Winkler is averaging 5.6 digs per set.
Fresno State vs. UNLV
The Rebels defeated the Bulldogs in four sets in the first meeting at the Save Mart Center. Maci Murdock hit .348 with 11 kills against the UNLV. The 'Dogs lead the overall series 4-3, but the Rebels have won the past two meetings.
Scouting the Rebels
UNLV is in third place in the Mountain West standings with three matches left in the regular season. The Rebels are 8-5 in MW action and 16-10 overall. UNLV was 0-2 last week suffering road losses to Colorado State and Wyoming. Madeline Westman leads the offense hitting .291 with 2.7 kills per set. She is also averaging a team-high 1.3 blocks per set. Defensively, Allison Davies is averaging 4.0 digs per set. The Rebels are averaging 12.6 kills, 15.3 digs and 2.4 blocks per set.
Brand Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors
Redshirt junior Marissa Brand was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 8 first team, which makes her now eligible for Academic All-America honors. It is the second academic all-district honor for Brand, who was one of six Mountain West volleyball players to earn the award.
Alcantara and Wild Among Nation's Best
Senior setter Barbara Alcantara and junior outside hitter Korrin Wild are in the top 25 in the nation in various statistical categories. Alcantara leads the league with 11.4 assists per set, which is also 22nd in the country. Wild has 50 service aces on the year and is averaging .47, which the best in the league and ninth in the nation.
Fresno State Leading the Pack
After the 12th week of the season, the Bulldogs are among the top 10 in several individual Mountain West statistical categories. Senior Barbara Alcantara leads the conference with 11.4 assists per set. She has a total of 1,198 assists on the season. She is also ninth in aces per set with 0.24. Junior Korrin Wild leads the conference with 0.47 aces per set, a total of 50 on the year. She is also seventh in the league with 3.3 kills per set. Maci Murdock is hitting .337, which is third best in the conference. Redshirt junior Marissa Brand is sixth in kills per set with 3.4. Christina Lee is seventh in digs per set averaging 4.1.
