Three MW Baseball Players Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

DURHAM, N.C. – Air Force first baseman Russell Williams and the New Mexico duo of pitcher Alex Estrella and catcher/designated hitter Chris DeVito were named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 Team on Thursday, an award that recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom and community.

Williams, a junior for the Falcons, earned his second consecutive Academic All-District this spring. The McKinney, Texas, native maintains a 3.75 grade-point average as an economics major. He has started all 40 games for Air Force at first, ranking second in the Mountain West with 431 chances and 407 putouts. He is batting .272 on the season with two home runs and 24 RBIs. Williams also ranks sixth in the conference with six sacrifice bunts.

Estrella becomes the third Lobo since 2003 to repeat as an Academic All-District honoree. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA in his graduate MBA program. On the field, Estrella holds a 2.42 ERA in a team-high 20 appearances this season. He has five saves and is holding opponents to a .205 batting average. His strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at 3/1 with 21 total strikeouts.

DeVito earns his first career Academic All-District honors with a 3.52 GPA in New Mexico's criminology program. He has a chance to become the fourth player in Lobo history to earn All-America honors athletically and academically. He currently leads the team with a .408 batting average, .707 slugging percentage and 54 RBI. He also has 17 doubles and 12 home runs. His 130 total bases ranks third in the nation.

All three student-athletes advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot. The Academic All-America Team will be announced on Friday, June 3.
