Three MW Student-Athletes Named to 2015 NCBWA Freshman All-America Team
DALLAS - Three Mountain West student-athletes were named to the 2015 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshmen All-American baseball team today. The New Mexico duo of Carl Stajduhar and Cory Voss were joined on the team by Nevada’s Cal Stevenson. Stajduhar was named to the First Team, while Voss and Stevenson earned Second Team honors.
A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Stajduhar set a new UNM freshman record for runs batted in with 53. He led the team in hits (75), doubles (21), home runs (9) and total bases (127), and he was second in runs (45). The Lobos starting third baseman hit .322 and was the only Lobo to appear in all 59 games this season. His play earned him All-Mountain West Second Team honors, and he was also named to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team after hitting .353 (6-for-17) with two homers, two doubles and eight runs in UNM's five games in Reno, Nevada last month.
Voss also hails from Colorado, by way of Pueblo. Named the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year, he hit .345 with 14 doubles, five triples and five home runs to lead the Lobos in slugging at .546. He drove in 35 runs, scored 34 and posted an on-base percentage of .431 all while starting at the catching position.
Stevenson has capped one of the most successful freshman seasons in recent Wolf Pack history. The MW Co-Freshman of the Year ranked third in the MW and in the top 10 in the nation among freshman with a .359 batting average. An outfielder from Fremont, California, he played in all 56 games and posted 78 hits, 55 runs, 13 doubles and 25 RBIs.
