Top-Seeded Fresno State Downs No. 8 Air Force 4-0 In 2015 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship Quarterfinal
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The top-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs looked every bit of that seed, taking down No. 8 Air Force 4-0 in the 2015 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals in their first outing in defense of the 2014 title. Due to inclement weather, the match was played in the Linda Estes Tennis Indoor Center instead of the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium at the University of New Mexico.
Fresno State, No. 49 in the latest ITA National Team Rankings, will face No. 5 Wyoming in the semifinals at 3 p.m. MT on Saturday.
The match started out as a tight affair, with sister tandem Rana and Maiar Sherif Ahmed won their doubles match for the Bulldogs 6-1, but Air Force’s Mary Meyers and Lili Forlini answered back at No. 2 with a 6-3 win. That left the doubles point to court three, and Sofya Malysheva and Tanya Murtaugh broke Air Force at 5-all and took the set 7-5.
That seemed to take the air out of Air Force and like a champion, Fresno State pounced. Maiar Sherif Ahmed (No. 2), Aishwarya Agrawal (No. 4) and Anne Susdorf (No. 6) closed it out in straight sets for the win. The clincher by Agrawal, who did it on her 22nd birthday, denied teammate Sophie Watts (No. 75 singles in ITA) a shot at her 22nd straight victory. Watts was serving for the match when the clincher occurred.
“Air Force is a great team and they really don’t give you anything. We had to work for it,” said head coach Ryan Stotland. “I thought we played really well. I thought we adjusted to playing indoors well, as we haven’t played an indoor match in a long time”
Fresno State improved to 18-4, while Air Force finished 18-9.
