Utah State Earns Comeback Victory Over Air Force in MW Women's Tennis Championship Opener
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The ninth-seeded Utah State women’s tennis team defeated No. 8 Air Force, 4-3, to open the 2016 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship at the UW Tennis Courts in Laramie, Wyoming. Due to weather conditions in Fort Collins, where Colorado State is hosting the championship, the Aggies and Falcons were forced to play an hour north at Wyoming’s indoor facility.
The Aggies advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round and will face top-seeded Fresno State at 1 p.m. MT at the Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colorado. Thursday is Utah State’s second Mountain West tournament win since joining the league in 2013.
Air Force earned the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions. The Falcons junior duo of Chloe Forlini and Jocelle Rudico defeated Monika Van De Vondel/Maggie O’Meara, 6-2. Securing the doubles point for AFA was Mary Meyers/Elisa Nelson, winning 6-4 over Sabrina Demerath/Ekaterina Tugarinova.
In singles action, Utah State picked up wins in order at No. 2 (Tugarinova 6-3, 6-4 over Meyers), No. 1 (Nini Guensler 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) over Forlini), No. 5 (O’Meara 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 over Rudico) and No. 6 (Meghan Lyall 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) over Meredith Laskey).
Thursday’s opening match ended in dramatic fashion. Utah State’s Lyall opened her match against Laskey with a 6-2 victory, but the second set was back and forth, ultimately going to a tiebreaker. Lyall opened up a commanding 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker before the Air Force freshman came storming back. After a back-and-forth series of points to tie the match at 8, the Aggies sophomore won the next two to earn the team victory for USU.
The win pushes Utah State’s record to 11-12, while Air Force ends its season with a 13-12 mark.
